Quantity needed?
Figuring how much stone is needed is fairly easy to do. We do recommend at least a thickness of 4″ of Crusher Run for new construction. More is needed for moist conditions.
Basically, all amounts are converted to cubic feet. Each type of rock from our products page has a weight per cubic foot. These Unit Weight(UW) amounts are typical for our quarry and are listed in lbs. per cubic foot.
Crusher run = 125
#5, #56, #57 = 105
#7 = 105
Asphalt Sand or Screenings = 110
River Sand = 112
The calculation for volume is Length (L) X Width(W) X Height (H) or “Thickness” equals Total Volume (TV).
Convert inches to feet by dividing inches/12. (4″ = 0.333 ft.).
Once Total Volume is calculated one then multiplies the TV by the UW and divide that number by 2000 to convert to Tons Needed(TN)
Here is an example of a Crusher Run driveway 100′ long by 10′ wide by 4″ thick.
100L X 10W X 0.333H =333TV
333TV X 125UW /2000 = 20.82TN (Tons of Crusher Run needed.)
Here is some added info. Most trucks will hold approximately 20 tons of rock and charge by the ton hauled and the distance. Most trucks have minimum tons they will haul without a surcharge (15 tons and $60) and total cost is based on the mileage from the quarry to the job site.
If you have any problems with the calculations, please give us a call. We arrange shipping with our customers who will then deliver to you. You pay the driver directly made out to the trucking company. Cash or check only is accepted.
